Alpaca Breeding and Spit Testing

posted in: Alpaca FAQ | 0

We hand breed our alpacas due to how are barns and alpaca groups are set up. This means we have the selected females in a pen and we bring the herdsire to breed to them during breeding season. We monitor the entire process and return the male to his barn.

To check if the females have either ovulated or become pregnant, we do a spit test. We bring the male back to check receptivity of our females. Some girls do really spit the green yucky stuff…while others just pin their ears back and run away if they are not receptive. If they are receptive, they will cush and allow the male to breed them.
